THE DETAILS.

Savarind’s work is grounded in a family history of inventors, makers and creatives. The studio’s conceptual sketches return to a particular corner of West Yorkshire, now the Yorkshire Sculpture Park — where the founder’s great grandparents lived and worked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Savarind Modular Component Furniture

Savarind designs and makes modular self-assembly furniture in birch plywood and Yorkshire Stainless steel. Below are the questions we’re asked most often about the materials, the range, and how it all works.

What is The Savarind Concept?

Furniture built from component parts designed to configure, combine, or reconfigure rather than stay fixed in one form.

What materials does Savarind use?

Savarind builds furniture from FSC formaldehyde-free B/B grade Baltic birch plywood, in both 18mm and 24mm, M16 Stainless steel threaded rods with wing nuts and bright zinc plated steel corner braces. The pigeon hole shelving is mounted on powder-coated steel brackets for load-bearing wall storage. The plywood forms the visible surface and the steel is used for fixings and structural connections.

How is Savarind furniture made?

The plywood is CNC cut to order, finished by hand with Savarind’s organic polish, assembled and then flat-packed as a self-assembly design. Steel fixings and components are cut to consistent tolerances so that the furniture is reliable to assemble and, where designed to, combine with other components to form other furniture pieces. Each piece is assembled and checked in the workshop before being flat-packed.

How is Savarind furniture packaged and shipped?

The pieces are flat-packed in straw, with instructions and hanging templates for the pigeon holes, in sleeved recycled cardboard boxes, before being shipped. Savarind currently delivers to the UK. We ship via various companies on a sale by sale basis.

How long does an order take?

There is a current lead time of 6 weeks on UK deliveries. We welcome international enquiries and fulfil overseas orders wherever possible, although lead times may extend beyond the 6 weeks depending on the destination.

Where is Savarind furniture made?

Savarind furniture is designed and made in West Yorkshire, in the north of England. The plywood is sourced from the European Union where it is manufactured, made from trees grown in responsibly managed forests. The rods, nuts, bolts, washers, red powdered coated anchor brackets and corner braces are all manufactured in Yorkshire, and the grey London brackets are manufactured in the UK.

What does “modular” mean across Savarind’s range?

There are various sizes and configurations available. We have curated a library of our components. The SAVARIND Concept Components Manifest ©2025. The relevant components used to create each piece of furniture are listed, along with alternative configurations, within the description and additional details sections of each product offered in the Emporium.

The trestles, seating and larger structural components are held together with the M16 rods and wing nuts, whilst the plywood tops and smaller plywood components are pre-fitted with bracketed pin joints.

We create the pin joints using opposing pairs of 19mm corner braces, which slide over the pre-drilled plywood to be held in place upon re-assembly using the supplied M4 nuts and bolts. The pieces are sent out with the pin joints having been pre-assembled and secured with 16mm pan head wood screws.

What is A Is for ART?

A is for ART is Savarind’s defining trestle table. A stands for A-frame and also Arthur, who was a tailor. The table is sold in two variants: A is for ART. I with a B/B grade 24mm birch plywood top (£1,692), and A is for ART. II with a 10mm clear toughened glass top (£1,692). Both designs feature 24mm plywood trestle bases for self-assembly using M16 steel threaded rods and wing nuts. The tables seat 6–8.

Steel vs solid wood furniture — which is better for commercial interiors?

For commercial interiors, steel components generally offer greater durability and dimensional consistency than solid wood equivalents, which matters where furniture is handled frequently or needs parts to keep fitting together reliably. Savarind pairs Yorkshire Stainless steel with birch plywood specifically to combine ease of assembly and durability with a tactile surface material. We believe that form follows function, in integrity of design and honesty of materials.

Is Savarind furniture just for homes, or also for commercial/gallery spaces?

Savarind’s work sits across residential interiors, our own studio and holiday lettings properties, institutions, retail and gallery/exhibition spaces, the clean materiality and bold design are engaging and user-friendly.

What finish is used on the plywood?

All plywood surfaces are finished with Savarind’s aromatic organic beeswax, rosin, linseed and rosemary polish, 2 coats applied by hand — this is a proprietary house finish, which hardens over time leaving a subtle protective sheen, conditioning the plywood. A 180ml amber glass jar of polish is supplied with each piece of furniture.

How do I order from Savarind?

The furniture can be browsed and bought in the Emporium, you can also see latest pieces and current work in the Gallery and Studio, view details of past Exhibitions and get in touch via the Connect page if you have any more questions.
